I have been measuring the snow depth out in the garden box.
I figure I can get the most accurate measurements there since the snow in it is completely undisturbed. This is definitely the most snow we have had since moving to Kamloops six and a half years ago.

I have a helpful dog walking tip for anyone who lives in an area that gets a lot of snow. If you get 8 inches of snow overnight you might want to take this into consideration the next morning when walking under a clothesline that you usually just have to duck your head slightly to get under.
All of this snow has made me especially happy about the first project cast on and off my needles in 2013. This is the latest Kate Davies pattern, Snawpaws, knit with Excelana yarn.
I loved how the real snowflakes were falling from the sky onto the snowflake pattern on the mittens.
I now have a matching hat and mittens, which is quite a change from my usual dog's breakfast of handknitted accessories.
I'm quite sure the neighbours won't recognize the stranger in their midst.
They are lovely! I hope your head is ok, and WOW that is a lot of snow, I can't imagine, since all we get is a bit of sleet!

DeleteSeems most of BC had lovely sunshine! We're clear and cold here, which doesn't happen too often.

Isn't the sun a nice change? I didn't know how much I had been missing it until it came out yesterday. I'm glad you had some too. The cold I could do without though. It got down to -17 here last night. Brrr...
DeleteYikes, fortunately our clothesline is a single, retractable line. But we manage to find other things to put us on our backsides. As for the neighbors, they just be jealous if they spot the hat and mittens--they're very pretty.
ReplyDeleteRetractable would be a good idea. No mishaps that way! I'm sure the neighbours are so confused by me by now they don't know what to think. Especially after today's photo shoot in the backyard when it was -17 out!

Beautiful matching hat and mittens, you will be the best dressed dog walker on the block. You have had so much snow! Today is the first day we have seen a couple of snowflakes but we are back to rain again.

DeleteSo pretty! I have knit 2 sets of matchies (a hat and mittens and a hat and warmers) but so far have never worn them together! Which i find funny! We don't have as much snow as you but we do have about a foot on the ground when the weather forecast called for about 1/2 inch! It's darn cold here with highs in the teens (F) and lows in the single digits. Wind chills going well below zero. Winter is finally here!

ReplyDeleteI did see that this morning Rachel, and of course instantly clicked on the link for the kit. It is quite a bit more than I would be willing to spend on something Fergus would probably bite holes in the first time he wore it. But I do have the Rams and Yowes blanket kit sitting in my stash which could be used for coats for both Fergus and Jenny. :-)

It is very deep, but we have actually lived in places in BC where we have had even more snow than this!

ReplyDeleteWe are forecast some snow in London this next few days...it would make you laugh, we get maybe 2 cms and everything grinds to a halt and I mean everything, no trains, buses, schools close ,its crazy. It usually happens every year at some point but it always seems a BIG shock to public transport and no one is prepared!!!
I have heard that London shuts down when it snows. I can understand that, but what always surprises me is the fact that Vancouver does too! Yes, the same Vancouver that hosted the 2010 Olympics. The city goes into a panic if snow is even in the forecast. :-)

DeleteOh, the snowy backdrop you have is completely beautiful. We've had a record year with snow. We haven't had ANY. It's bizarre. It doesn't really feel like winter without it. Anyway... Your mittens and hat are beautiful. The contrast between the white and blue is fantastic.

ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa - it is one of my favourite shades of blue, and the yarn has a wonderful feel to it. It's hard to go wrong with a picture taken in the snow on a sunny day!

ReplyDeleteJust had a Jan. thaw here in Central NY, but heading back in for round two of winter by the end of the week.
My sympathies for the thaw and return to winter scenario. It is always so confusing when it does that. You gear up for winter, then everything melts and gets rather ugly looking, then you return to winter again. I much prefer it to just stay winter when it's winter. And when it's spring I don't want to return to it.
DeleteYou sure do have a lot of snow. Here in Essex, England we are awaiting our first snowfall this year. It probably won't amount to much but it's quite exciting all the same. DeleteWe were forecast snow, guess what we got ... more rain! Honestly, if this keeps up the farmers in the UK will have to switch to growing rice! I would love to have 20" of snow! But only if I had a pair of such lovely mitts to keep my hands warm ;)
